Kindra writes Bible stories for middle grades. She loves digging deep and bringing to light important Bible details we often read past. Her educational components make her books fitting for families, Sunday Schools, and homeschools. “I love seeing the Bible fresh. New words can do that. I want to fall to my knees in humble adoration—like I’m meeting God for the first time—then rise to my tiptoes clapping for all He’s done. That’s what my stories aim to do.”

FAQ

• What inspired you to start writing for children? How she began to write is a story in itself. Maybe one day she’ll tell it in all its glory. Here’s the short version: Deep in the woods of northern Michigan, a Voice spoke. “Write for Me. Children’s Bible stories: Simple Truths.” She tried to reason those words out of existence. But she couldn’t. So, Kindra added a Seminary writing certificate to her teaching degree. She accepted some invitations to speak–and a job as a children’s ministry director. All the while, behind the scenes, she wrote. She went on to dry up a lot of pens and crumple up a lot of paper. And she quit a lot. Today, Kindra is a multi-award-winning children’s author.
• How do you come up with your story ideas? “The Bible is so rich. The deeper you drill, the more gems there are to mine. Every mind-blowing insight excites me. I want to write about them all!”
• What is your writing process like? “I read scripture. I dig in. I pull out the lexicon, read commentaries, and cross reference. I pull out history books, archeological information, and books on ancient customs. I read scripture again. Did I miss anything the first time? Did my study help me understand better? Did it paint a clearer picture for me? When my mind is blown, then I write.”
• What advice do you have for young writers? “Writers write. A lot. Use a Ticonderoga. And a giant eraser. Good writing is editing. And never stop learning to write better.”
• What is your favorite part about being a children’s author? “Bringing glory to the Maker of the universe.”
• What was the first book you ever wrote? “One in fourth grade about an adventure in my backyard with my favorite cousins. We found a hole with striped dragons of all colors. It made it to a state competition.”
• Do you have any upcoming projects? “Always! I’m hammering down on one–with another fleshed out and ready to write. And several more I’m dreaming about.”
• What are the themes in your book? “God’s goodness and majesty, an enemy with an agenda, and how we use the power God gave us in response to both.”
